”Nordic Challenges, Future Possibilities – Gender Awareness in Schools and Teacher Education”

In Nordic countries, gender equality is seen as a value to be cherished and the advancement of it has been made a task for the schools and teacher education. Despite of many projects, legal demands and recommendations gender equality is still a future aim. Sometimes in schools and in teacher education there are tendencies of thinking, that gender equality is already achieved, and teachers know, how to treat people equally without specific training. The research on school practices have, on the other hand, made it clear that all sort of problematic inequalities, hierarchies and divisions related to gender and other differences are maintained in schools and educational institutions. Teacher education seldom gives enough tools to tackle with these issues and problems, and it fails to support teacher’s abilities to become gender aware and advance equality in school practices.

The conference ”Nordic Challenges, Future Possibilities – Gender Awareness in Schools and Teacher Education” aims to open discussion based on recent Nordic research on what is the current situation of gender awareness in schools and teacher training, and how to find the way to the better future. In the conference, specialists introduce research findings and new ideas on how pedagogical practises and teacher education should be developed. In Nordic societies and school systems there are several similarities and the co-operation between Nordic researchers have been active in the field of education. The co-operation of joint development between school researchers and teacher educators started in the 1980’s, and in the beginning of 1990’s a Nordic project on gender aware teacher education (Nord Lilia) was successful. Now it is time to look back and think what has changed in the last 15 years and what should be done in the near future. The aim of the conference is to analyse the current situation and future plans from different Nordic viewpoints, to distribute knowledge on successful ideas and practices and find ways to advance the co-operation between school researchers and teacher educators.
The conference is part of the implementation of the Nordic gender equality cooperation programme 2011-2014 and it is partly financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The conference is organised by the “Gender Awareness in Teacher Education” project funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The project aims to support the development of gender aware teacher education (http://wiki.helsinki.fi/display/tasuko). All universities offering teacher training in Finland are partners in the project. The project leader is professor Elina Lahelma and the project is located in the Institute of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Helsinki.
The conference “Nordic Challenges, Future Possibilities – Gender Awareness in Schools and Teacher Education” will be organized in 9.3.2011 in Jyväskylä (Central Finland). It is free of charge and all are welcome to join in. The last day of the registration is 25.2.2011.

In the main conference there will be Gender and Education Network sessions with interesting papers. The main conference fee is to be paid by the participants themselves. Through the NERA conference web site you will find information on accommodation, travel and the city of Jyväskylä. Accommodation and travel arrangements are expected to be organised by the participants of the “Nordic Challenges, Future Possibilities – Gender Awareness in Schools and Teacher Education” conference themselves.
